Other services and referral partners

We may introduce you to third-party providers for services outside the financial advice we provide. Depending on your needs, these may include Tower, Initio, Koura Wealth, XE Money, Heartland Bank, Avanti Finance, MovingHub and providers of asset finance or UK pension-transfer services.

Unless we expressly agree otherwise in writing, we do not provide financial advice on a referred provider’s products and have not assessed whether its service is suitable for your particular needs. You are free to use another provider or conduct your own research.

Fees and expenses

OneLife Financial and its financial advisers usually do not charge a fee for advice or arranging a transaction because we generally receive commission from the applicable product provider. The exceptions are described below. We will explain and agree any fee with you before it is incurred.

One-off fee where no commission is received

If you ask us to provide services in relation to a product or service for which OneLife Financial or the financial adviser will not receive commission, we may charge a one-off fee. Any fee will be agreed and authorised by you in writing before the service is completed and will be based on an estimate of the time required.

This may arise where you request services relating to a product offered by a provider with which we do not hold an accreditation, or a product outside our usual provider arrangements.

Commission repayment or clawback

A product provider may require commission to be repaid if you make certain changes shortly after a loan settles or an insurance policy is issued. If this occurs, we may charge you a one-off fee in the following circumstances:

  • for lending: during the 28-month period following drawdown, the loan is fully or partially repaid or its terms are materially changed; or
  • for insurance: during the 24-month period following policy issue, the policy is cancelled or its terms are materially changed, and the insurer requires commission to be repaid.

Any such fee will be no more than $3,000 plus GST, if any, and will be calculated at $250 plus GST, if any, per hour of adviser time spent providing advice in connection with the applicable product. The fee will not exceed the amount of commission required to be repaid to the product provider.

Approval obtained but application does not proceed

If you use our advice services to obtain an approval and then instruct us not to proceed with the application for the product discussed, we may charge a one-off fee for our time. The fee will be calculated at $250 per hour, up to a maximum of $1,500, for time spent providing financial advice in connection with the applicable product.

You will be invoiced for any one-off fee and will have 30 days to make payment. Your financial adviser will disclose any other applicable fees in their personalised Disclosure Guide and during the advice process.

Commissions, incentives and conflicts of interest

If you proceed with a product based on financial advice received from us, OneLife Financial or the financial adviser will usually receive a commission or incentive payment from the applicable product provider.

The types of payments that may be received include:

  • upfront commission calculated as a percentage of the first year’s premium for insurance, or a percentage of the loan at drawdown;
  • renewal commission calculated as a percentage of insurance premiums paid while a policy remains in force, or an ongoing percentage of a loan balance;
  • fixed-rate rollover or refix fees;
  • referral fees or commissions from referral partners; and
  • other incentives or rewards, such as gifts or tickets to events.

Your financial adviser will give you further information about the commissions and incentives relevant to the advice, including the applicable provider and maximum calculation rates.

We take steps to manage conflicts of interest and ensure that commissions do not improperly influence our advice. We do this by:

  • following an advice process designed to identify your goals, needs and circumstances;
  • ensuring recommendations address the needs and goals identified within the agreed scope;
  • providing information about commission rates and types by product provider; and
  • requiring regular training on managing conflicts of interest.

Our duties

We are bound by duties under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013. When giving regulated financial advice, we are required to:

  • meet the standards of competence, knowledge and skill set by the Code of Professional Conduct for Financial Advice Services;
  • give priority to our clients’ interests where there is a conflict;
  • exercise care, diligence and skill; and
  • meet standards of ethical behaviour, conduct and client care.

This is a summary of our duties. More information is available from us or from the Financial Markets Authority at www.fma.govt.nz.
